This year a new offering has been added to the Institute’s seminar series’ – the NZIA ASSA ABLOY Urban Design Series. The keynote speaker is the Victorian Government Architect, Professor Geoffrey London. Two of New Zealand’s leading urban designers – Alistair Ray (Jasmax) and Graeme McIndoe (McIndoeUrban) will also present. Patrick Clifford (Architectus), President Elect will Chair the series
The series will tour to a further three locations – Dunedin, Tauranga and New Plymouth – later in the year.
PROFESSOR GEOFFREY LONDON is the Victorian Government Architect, who has had an impressive career in architecture. Professor London leads the Office of the Victorian Government Architect which provides strategic advice to Government about architecture and urban design and offers critical understanding of building design to Government Ministers and Departments.
Professor London also holds the position of Professorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne. He is a past Chair of the Committee of Heads of Architecture Schools of Australasia and was Past President of the Western Australian Chapter of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects.
He was also the Western Australian Government Architect. He has held the position of Professor of Architecture at the University of Western Australia and was a past Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Head of School.
GRAEME McINDOE (McIndoeUrban) is a Wellington-based architect and urban designer. He chairs the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) on the Wellington waterfront and is a member of the TAG for the Wynyard Quarter in Auckland. He taught the urban design history, theory and methods course at the Victoria University School of Architecture from 2000-2008, and was principal co-author of the MfE’s Value of Urban Design report, and author of the Urban Design Toolkit. In practice since 1982, his recent experience includes major development projects for both the public and private sectors.
ALISTAIR RAY (Jasmax) has 15 years experience as an urban designer/urban planner both in the UK and NZ and currently leads urban design and masterplanning at Jasmax. In the UK, he led the Newcastle’s City Council’s urban design team that won national recognition for work promoting quality urban design. In NZ he worked with the Auckland City Council on a number of urban design projects and is advisor on urban design to both the Auckland Schools of Architecture.
