ARCHITECTURE
A cultural confluence of change: structure I form I programme I expression

Leading Australian architecture firm Jackson Architecture – behind such designs as the MCG’s Southern Stand and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music – will exhibit at the first Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning’s ‘Alumni Retrospective Series’ for 2010.

The series aims to profile the ideas, practice and vision of the Faculty’s many alumni, beginning with one of the University’s most prominent graduate architects, Daryl Jackson.

Honoured with an Order of Australia in 1987 and a former Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) Gold Medallist, Jackson has been in practice for more than 45 years and has earned countless professional and public accolades, with his buildings in locations as diverse as Sydney, Perth, London, New Delhi, Riyadh in Saudi Arabia and Dalian in China.

The exhibition at the University’s Wunderlich Gallery will feature selected works by Jackson Architecture including: the Clayton Community Centre in Melbourne, Perth Arena, the Commonwealth Games Village in Delhi and the Dalian Sports Centre in China.

A film of Professor Philip Goad, Director of the Melbourne School of Design, in conversation with Daryl Jackson, will also run in the gallery space.

Professor Goad says the exhibition is an excellent showcase of Jackson’s practice and the extent of his national and international presence. “Above all, it shows his ongoing commitment to an idea of the city as a place that is vital, in flux, but aware of its past, resilient and robust.”

Established in 1965, Jackson Architecture is an international practice with offices in Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane, London, Vietnam and China. The practice encompasses a range of experience and expertise including schools and universities, libraries, sports arenas and recreational spaces, commercial offices, hospitals, hotels and airports.  Major projects include: Etihad Stadium, the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Wesley College, the MCG’s Southern Stand, the University of Ballarat and the Australian Film, Television & Radio School.

The ABP Alumni Retrospective Series is intended to highlight the extraordinary range and contribution to the urban environment of alumni from all professional programs of the MSD within the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning, both recent and past.
