STATE OF DESIGN EVENT PAGE

SOL.a’ is a kinetic sculpture actuated by the sun’s solar energy specific to its location at Federation Square’s Plaza. SOL.a acts a visual recorder and translator of the space by harnessing the sun to activate the sculpture’s thermally sensitive materials. It also generates renewable energy in order to animate itself physically and acoustically. Over time the sculpture encapsulates the memory of the recording its transformation.

SOL.a’ is a project that targets environmental awareness, utilizing the site’s natural environmental conditions to reveal the possibilities of solar power. ‘SOL.a’ is a project that alerts the community to the importance of our current environmental issues.

The project is a collaboration between Singapore-based artist Grace Tan from Kwodrant, the OUTr Research Lab from RMIT University: Craig Douglas, Rosalea Monacella, Greg Afflick, Thomas Harper, Carlie Young, Kathryn English, Joseline Setiawan, and Armando Oliver, and Arup Engineers Melbourne.
