A meaningful role in the provision of housing for the many continues to elude the architectural profession. Already bound up with factors outside the architect’s influence, expertise or interest, the field of general housing is now an even more difficult and urgent challenge because of its interrelation with climate change, demographic shifts and declining affordability. At a moment of crisis, we are compelled to ask ourselves again what our contribution to this field may be.
Foregrounding the value of architectural thinking beyond the bespoke house and the communication of this to a wide audience, September’s Process will shed light on a successful attempt to engage with the mass-housing market from our own historical lineage – The Age/RVIA Small Homes Service.
We’ll also hear about where the market and industry currently stand from an expert on green-field residential development, and examine emerging ideas and models for engagement with the contemporary situation. How might we design housing for the broader market today, and how can those ideas gain any traction?
September’s Process at Loop Bar is chaired & curated by Barend Meyer
