Shelters, a new major public installation work Joseph L. Griffiths has developed for the 2012 Next Wave Festival. The project specifically engages issues of land-use, urban planning, architecture and design, as well as the many social problems and potential solutions facing our modern cities. The project traces the connections between artistic creativity and survival skills against the backdrop of a failed metropolis in Melbourne’s Docklands. The 3 site specific installations are based on improvised living structures, assembled from recycled urban waste collected throughout the precinct. Shelters will be installed around the New Quay Promenade (the main cafe/restaurant strip) in Docklands from Saturday 19 May – Sunday 27 May.
The festival is presented in a condensed format during this week 19-27 May 2012, full details available at nextwave.org.au.

There is a Next Wave Festival Opening Party next Friday 18 May, from 6.30 pm – late at the Footscray Community Arts Centre – 5 Moreland Street, Footscray VIC 3011. One of the 3 structures will be on location for the party.
I will also be hosting a Sunset Closing Celebration on Sunday 27 May, from 3 – 5pm at New Quay Promenade Docklands. It will be a wonderful opportunity to gather, explore the installations together, share ideas, and watch the evening fall.
