The Mechanics of Visual Perception explores the relationship between the eye and the mind, when perception becomes distorted by physiological changes.

The work evolves from a personal trauma, when in 2007, William Feuerman suffered from an acute, isolated stroke that affected the coordination of his eyes. He had not lost sight but the relationship between his eyes and brain brought about a new way of seeing. When both eyes were open, the left eye was essentially paralyzed, pulled permanently to one side, causing double vision.

As a designer, William was in a unique position to graphically document this disability and provide the team of doctors with evidence of how his sight was manipulated.

Making what was invisible to others visible, he used collage as a medium to produce a visual dictionary demonstrating an altered state of perception. Images produced represent a plethora of ways that the eye and mind processed and distorted the space around him, as well as the transition as the brain began to heal. Accompanied architectural diagrams and mappings investigate the mechanics between the body, the mind, and the environment, exploring a neurological perceptual distortion with accuracy.

Continued work uses machine apparatus’, light studies and 3D technologies to examine how new ways of seeing can be translated into dynamic visual surfaces and installations that challenge everyday perceptions and have clear spatial implications.
