Frank Gehry wows UTS

In case you hadn’t heard, UTS recently announced Californian celebrity architect Frank Gehry as the architect for the new Faculty of Business building in Ultimo. They’re obviously not trying to make friends with the local architectural fratenity. UTS are delighted and sound as if they’ve won the jackpot. The 80 year old legend, who has just been in town on a flying visit, declined to comment due to a tummy bug.

NOx eating facade

I don’t usually put product info in the news, but this looks interesting – a titanium dioxide coated decorative facade that fights pollution. It can be seen installed at enex100, a retail complex in Perth.

Cheap at a quarter the price

A 2000sqm site in Auckland’s Paratai Drive, previously home to two dogs, is expected to sell soon for over $10M. Who would pay that? The NZ Herald asks “high end home” architect Architect Simon Carnachan . No problem he reckons – cashed up JAFAs like, “showing the world you’ve got the money and you’re not afraid to flaunt it. Success in New Zealand seems to be judged by wealth rather than anything else.” Presumeably a buyer would then build a house on said site, and Carnachan thinks they’d get a bargain.

Messenger or Salesman?

Christopher Hawthorne at the LA Times draws a long bow and suggests Julius Shulman’s love of modern architecture and wide open spaces helped to feed the suburban lifestyle aspirations of late 20th Century Angelenos. He thinks this angle should have been examined in the recent biopic on Shulman. And I thought he was just taking good photos.

wharf worries

The NZ Herald reports on discontent about the winning designs in the Queens Wharf competition. There are various grumblings from academics, Maori representatives, and quite a few readers. And Dave Mitchell has a go at the competition itself: “This is an $80 million building project. The total sum to be paid to all contestants for the key design ideas stage is 1/1000th of the project cost. That shows you the value that our national and local governments together place on design.”
