Backyard pools

Emergent Urbanism reports on a different type of subdivision. Miami’s outer suburban subdivisions apparently must have their own reservoirs. Looks odd from a satellite.

Eastern Cemetery Mausoleum

Phillip Harmer’s newly opened Eastern Cemetery Mausoleum in Geelong has attracted an enthusiastic write up in the Geelong Advertiser. Perhaps by the real estate department.

Wind turbines not passed

Robert Rockefeller’s plans to mount giant wind turbines to catch the Southerly blusters from his Hobart buildings have been furled in by the council on heritage grounds. The debate was “heated”, possibly by a coal-fired power station.

Moscow crumbles

The Moscow Architectural Preservation Society has released an update to its 2007 report on the sad state of many of the city’s important buildings. In an atmosphere of gung-ho development, more old buildings are at risk than ever. Here are a few.

Bogong moth

The one day I spent living with a Bogong Moth (clinging to the ranch sliders at Bermagui) was pretty strange, especially what it got up to with the fly screen… So I can only find it strange to hear that this huge scary moth was Callum Fraser’s inspiration for his latest hotel for ski bunnies, Quay West Resort & Spa (previously known as St. Falls).

On you Open House

For those in Melbourme too set in their Sunday ways to make it, Open House was the place you should have been. According to one volunteer, it was four times the size of last year’s. The concept is pretty basic – open up private buildings to the public for the day, and let them see what’s behind the facade. My visit concentrated on the rapidly growing part of town that is Docklands. Not necessarily growing very well, but there are some gems in the dirt.
