Christchurch Dreaming

I’ve just woke up two hours early today from a dream that may have turned into a nightmare. I was living in Christchurch. Looking around me, a sizeable chunk of Melbourne’s architects were living there too. A few trams had made the journey too. I went on one house visit. The place was a bit like one of Boyd’s tiered hillside houses, except that each tier had moved independently of the others in the earthquake. I think the experience of that was disturbing enough to wake me up. Or maybe it was the bevy of noisy architects sitting on the top level in tricky chairs. Obviously time to check out what has been happening in Christchurch since the February quake.

Site shift

Sorry it has been a bit quiet recently. Apart from being a bit flat out, my web host has been causing me some quite expensive grief. Upshot is that I am shifting the entire website and database to another web host. From now on, any new comments to the forum or this page may not appear on the new site.

This Fairfax video link is promotion masquerading as information. Nonetheless it is worth a look if only for the theatrical performance of garden wall guru Patrick Blanc. The topic is the Central Park development in Sydney – the Atelier Jean Nouvel building in particular.

Lift to view

OK, so you’ve paid $32M for a site in Point Piper, but it’s not on the sea side of the road, and its pretty damn steep. First thing to do is clear the existing historic mansion. Next, build a new one. Then build a Bat Cave, but swap the bat poles for a bat lift.

Hearstiography

For a limited time, SBS online is showing Up To The Sky Episode 1: The Hearst Tower, a half hour german documentary (with English narration). It’s a mildly interesting doco, if you can call it a documentary – it is rather gushingly positive. It zigzags about between various topics – one of the more interesting tidbits to emerge was that Foster’s initial presentation to the Hearst board was taking place when the World Trade Center was attacked down the street.
